As the Fall season approaches many of us are focusing on "back to school" priorities at home.  IFMA Atlanta is also busy with our educational discussions and programs.

  • A number of committed professional members (the mentors) have been facilitating the development of other persons (the mentees) by sharing skills, expertise, perspective and guidance.  To learn more about getting involved in Career Mentoring you may want to speak with one of our mentors/mentees or view the following link:

    • William Broome, CFM, SFP, The Westminster Schools, is mentoring Mautrice Walter, CCT, CMIT, Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) graduate.
    • Clara Smith, CFM, CMS Enterprises, is mentoring Kristin Posada, GA Tech FM student.
    • Joseph Geierman, CFM, FMP, Troutman Sanders, is mentoring Ricks Anderson, St. Joseph's Mercy Care Services.
    • Anne Shrock, CFM, Relogistics, is mentoring Brandon Gardiner, GA Tech MBA graduate.
    • Lindsey Bradshaw, CFM, Turner Broadcasting System, is mentoring Cheryl Redmond, Wells Real Estate Funds.
  • On September 10, IFMA Atlanta members Anthony Maddox, Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU), Ken Stephenson, CFM, AIA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Ken Bryson, LEED AP, AIA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be speaking at the 2012 Fall Conference of the Georgia Association of State Facilities Administrators (GASFA).  GASFA provides a leadership forum for the exchange of ideas as well as education for professionals employed in the state government of Georgia.  The conference will include updates on state facilities issues and best practices in facilities operations and maintenance.
  • IFMA Advocacy Day will take place in Washington, D.C. September 11-12. IFMA Atlanta will be represented by Christy Jellets, Atlanta Botanical Garden, and Gean Leyba, Research in Motion.  Christy and Gean will hear about IFMA's government affairs program, attend training on how to articulate IFMA's position on certain issues, and learn what is expected in a meeting with a member of Congress or their staff.  Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with members of the U.S. Congress on:
    • issues and policies affecting the built environment,
    • issues and developments affecting our region,
    • creating common sense solutions for energy efficient building initiatives,
    • and the importance of continuing education for effective facility management.
  • On Wednesday, September 19, the Chapter will conduct our monthly meeting as a breakfast event at Maggiano's Perimeter.  The speaker will be John McFarland, PE, CCP, CEM, LEED AP BD+C, Director of Operations & Sustainability, Principal, Working Buildings, LLC.  John will discuss facility commissioning, benefits to Owners and Facility Managers, and rewards associated with avoidance of non-commissioned facilities.  Please register at:

  • On October 10, IFMA Atlanta members Anthony Maddox, Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU), and Joe Carroll, SPHR, CMF, IST Management Services, will be speaking at the Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) Career Day.  Their objective is to share information about IFMA Atlanta opportunities including the mentoring program and potential scholarships.

Our Chapter offers many ways to participate in professional development and educational opportunities throughout the year.  We try to make these experiences fun and a worthwhile use of our valuable time.  Please let us know what you think!

September 26 - Tour of Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Building

(Please note: this tour was rescheduled from August 22)

Please join us to tour one of the largest construction projects in Atlanta during the early 1900's.  This seven-story granite and marble "starved classicism" style building contains outstanding examples of Art Deco-inspired ornamentation. This project achieved LEED Gold Certification and is a fusion of rehabilitation, preservation, recreation and sustainable design, using the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and the Building Preservation Plan as guidelines. The project was executed in multiple phases while the building remained occupied, the design and construction team dealing skillfully with changing safety, security, and accessibility complications.

Professional Development - Recent and Upcoming Activities

The committees and programs that make up the Professional Development activities of IFMA Atlanta have gotten this year off to a strong start thanks to the efforts of the Committee Chairs and members. We are trying to work hard at establishing collaborative relationships with other Facilities Management organizations and this is aiding in our efforts. We are also experimenting with some other changes to the way we reach out to the IFMA membership.  Some of the highlights of the year thus far are...

GA Tech Corner

The Georgia Tech master's program is taking its relationship with the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA to the next level with a newly formed Working Group of students and alumni from the program who are also IFMA members.  With our mix of non-traditional students (working professionals), international students, and more students now coming directly into the program from undergraduate degrees, a wide range of knowledge and experience is incorporated into the IFMA Foundation Accredited degree.

The Working Group was formed to bring the chapter and the master's program closer together.  This first article will share some of the history of this relationship and future articles will deliver more details of the group's recommendations and activities.

In 2000, the Atlanta Chapter held a silent auction fund-raiser event and donated funds to launch the graduate program in Facility Management at Georgia Tech.  That fall, the first class of 25 students began the second graduate FM program in the U.S, expanding on the example Cornell set with its much smaller program.  Since that time, the chapter has continued to support the program financially, with expertise in the classroom, and with numerous projects supported mutually by the Institute and the Chapter.

Currently 19 of Atlanta's chapter members are either Georgia Tech students or alumni.  Two of those alums are current chapter Board members!

Two Ph.D. students provided research to write the IFMA Strategic Facility Planning white paper in 2010 that is a major resource to IFMA members and visitors seeking information from IFMA's website.

Members of the Working Group include:

Kathy Roper - Georgia Tech Professor / Liaison Coordinator

Ken Stephenson - CDC- IFMA Atlanta VP Professional Development -GT/BC Alumnus

Ken Bryson - CDC - IFMA Atlanta Chapter VP - GT Architecture Alumnus

Dee Raya - Coca Cola - IFMA Atlanta Foundation / Scholarship Chair

Ellis Kirby - Sodexo - IFMA Atlanta Member - GT/BC Student

Laurie Swift - Verint - IFMA Atlanta Member - GT/BC Alumna

Joseph Geierman - Troutman Sanders - IFMA Atlanta VP Communications- GT/BC    Alumnus

Barbara Miller- Akzo-Noble - IFMA Atlanta Member - GT/BC Alumna

We look forward to expanding the opportunities for all of our students, IFMA members and the master's program overall.
